SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS
MSN Messenger:
This is our preferred solution. This free software runs on PCs and Macintosh
platforms (although no audio/video on Macintosh). It can be downloaded
from messenger.msn.com.
This solution requires that you use a Microsoft
.NET Passport (If you have
a Hotmail or MSN.com e-mail address then you already have a Passport)
- Learn more here. This
solution does NOT allow you to directly call a specified IP address (for
that you need an H.323 client or SIP client). Messenger also allows application-sharing.
Here are some or our experiences with this software : click
here.
YAHOO Messenger &
AOL Messenger
Sometimes we have had to use YAHOO messenger (when MSN Messenger doesn't
work). Contrary to the MSN solution, the Yahoo messenger for
Macintosh has audio/video capabilities allowing us to videoconference
with Macintosh platforms. A third solution is AIM (the AOL messenger)
which has the advantage of allowing
PC users
to
use
it to
communicate with iChat
users on the Macintosh platform.
iVISIT
This solution allows very easy multiperson participation and it seems that
the video is smoother.
NETMEETING
/ OHphone and
other H.323 Clients
The H.323 teleconferencing protocol is used to transmit and receive audio
and video information over the Internet. It was created before MSN & Yahoo
messengers were every created and is an international standard rather
than a proprietary solution. Some people use Polycom Telecommunication
hardware to communicate which is incompatible with the other solutions.
The challenge encountered
with this solution is usually related to Firewalls & NAT-traversal,
however some solutions exist !
