I.M.T. - Instituto de Medicina Tradicional (Institute of Traditional Medicine) exists since 1997 and is, today, the main Portuguese reference in teaching and training in the CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) field, called in Portugal as “non-conventional therapies” as they were already defined by our Law n.º 45/2003, 22nd of August of 2003 (Dec.-Lei n.º 45/2003 – Lei de Enquadramento das Terapêuticas Não-Convencionais de 22 de Agosto), as well as other CAM related techniques not considered in the current legislation.
The growing interest in this kind of health care by the Portuguese public has also led to a growing professional interest in CAM, since nowadays there are more and more individuals interested in professional training on CAM.
This growing demand takes us to a commitment with quality that has to be visible and palpable in every way.
The main purpose of IMT is teaching, training, researching, development and divulgation of good practices on CAM.
IMT strategy, as the way to achieve its purposes, stands on the maintenance and solidification of its current status as the leading Portuguese organization in its area.
To do so IMT assumes as its goal the quest for total quality as to the methodologies applied on teaching, training, researching, development and divulgation of good practices on CAM.
IMT, when facing adversity, stands determined on the intransigent defence of the values and principles inherent to good public health, values that guide all of its actions.
Our values are built upon a holistic approach to the integral individual as a philosophical and (re)emerging paradigm of health care. These values stand for defence and promotion of health and well being of the individual. IMT calls for humanism, human dignity and professionalism as the assurance bases of a more healthy society, more upright, equitable and fruitful.
IMT collaborators conduct is guided by the continuous search for perfection and improvement, at personal, professional as well as in an organizational way.
Our main areas include Naturopathy; Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicines and Moxa; Auricolotherapy; Osteopathy; Homeopathy; Herbal Medicine; Manual Therapies (Reflexology, Shiatsu, Do-In, Therapeutic Massage, Lymphatic Draining Massage); Tai-Chi, Trainers Training on CAM, among others.
