Main activities of the Department of Preventive Medicine, School of Public Health, Fudan University

Medical education

1. For undergraduate students, our department teaches two courses:

   1. Preventive medicine (for students in the School of clinical medicine and in the School of nursing)

   2. Life course and health (for all undergraduate students at Fudan University)

2. For postgraduate students, our department teaches one course on “Theory and practice on health promotion research”. A new course on “Methodology for community based Intervention” is planned.

3. Continuing medical education. We hold every year both national and local level training courses on:

   1. Clinical preventive medicine

   2. Community health service and disease prevention

   3. Chronic disease self management approach

Research

Since 1990, the main researches of our department were focused on community based chronic disease prevention and control, and community health services for the aged. The following are examples:

1. Multidimensional functional assessment of the community-dwelling aged in Shanghai (1995-1998)

2. Comprehensive community based stroke prevention and control programme (1995-2000)

3. Cross-sectional investigation of the prevalence and quality of life of the patients with arthritis in Shanghai (1999-2002)

4. Implementation and evaluation of chronic disease self-management program (CDSMP) in Shanghai (1998-2001)

5. Comprehensive community tobacco cessation programme in China (2002-)

6. Chronic disease self-management demonstration programme in Shanghai (2002-)

7. Community comprehensive diabetes rrevention and control programme in Shanghai (2002-)
