At the end of the module, participants will be able to:

Describe the different contraceptive methods:

  • Combined oral contraceptives
  • Implantable contraceptives
  • Intrauterine devices
  • Natural methods
  • Immunocontraception
  • Male methods

Describe their mechanism of action, effectiveness, side effects and medical eligibility criteria, according to the available evidence

Describe the different methods used for female sterilization

  • tubal clips, rings, partial tubectomy, etc and their effectiveness and risks
  • discuss possible related effects (such as menstrual disturbances, ectopic pregnancy, etc)

Describe vasectomy and its effectiveness and risks

Use the WHO Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use

Discuss new research findings and ongoing research in the field of family planning

Recognize the constraints that affect the use of contraception in different settings and the consequences arising from that

Describe the different types, effectiveness and side effects of emergency contraceptive methods

Discuss the different methods used to interrupt pregnancy:

  • Surgical methods
  • Medical methods

and describe their effectiveness, advantages and disadvantages, based on scientific evidence

Describe unsafe abortion:

  • Definition
  • Consequences
