Paul Bischof is a recently retired “Professeur Titulaire” from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University of Geneva. He is a consultant with Viollier laboratories in the field of reproductive medicine. He studied biochemistry in Geneva, obtained his PhD in 1974, and was a Post-doctoral fellow at Ciba-Geigy in Basel (presently Novartis) and later at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University of Aberdeen, Scotland.

He teaches reproductive endocrinology at the universities of Geneva, Claude Bernard (Lyon, France) and Paris-Descartes, he is a member of several editorial boards and scientific societies, a former consultant with WHO, a member of the Swiss FIVNAT committee and the president of the scientific committee of Premup (a French thematic network for research and treatment of prematurity).

His past research interest was in placental proteins and he was the first to characterise and develop a test to measure pregnancy associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A), a widely used parameter for trisomy 21 risk assessment. His last research dealt with human embryo implantation and he developed an in-vitro model using primary cultures of human placental cells to mimic the behaviour of the human blastocyst. This model is still used to study at the cellular and the molecular level, the regulation by paracrine and endocrine factors of matrix metallo-proteinases the enzymes responsible for the invasive behaviour of embryos at implantation.

Paul is the author of 183 peer reviewed original articles, 9 reviews, 2 books and 30 textbook chapters. He is a Swiss citizen, married and has two children.
