2005 IAMANEH Newsletter Greetings to all the national sections of IAMANEH. With this newsletter, we would like to inform you of some of the benefits available by being a part of the IAMANEH family. Please distribute the information provided in this newsletter to as many members of your association as possible. The aim of the international section of IAMANEH is to support national sections so that they can improve the care of mothers and infants in their own countries. In order to achieve this goal, there are four main initiatives:
Training Course in Research in Reproductive Health The Geneva Foundation for Medical Education and Research (GFMER), in collaboration with WHO and IAMANEH, conducts an annual course in research training in reproductive health in Geneva. Participants learn how to conduct clinical research projects and how to identify areas of research needs in their own countries. They will also get acquainted with new findings and research results in the field of reproductive health. For the online application form, please see: Training in Reproductive Health Research - Geneva 2006 - Application form. IAMANEH offers scholarships in the amount of CHF 4'000 per participant, which will cover accommodation and part of living costs in Geneva (see Training in Reproductive Health Research - Geneva 2006 - IAMANEH Scholarship). The course has also been disseminated to other collaborating centres
(Rosario in Argentina;
Yaoundè in Cameroon;
Shanghai
in China; Jakarta
in Indonesia, and
Targu-Mures in Romania).
Lecturers in these courses have been trained during the Geneva based courses.
It is planned to extend the course to additional centres. For further information
see : Reproductive Health Journal Reproductive Health is an open access, online, peer-reviewed, Medline–indexed journal, affiliated to IAMANEH. It is the official journal of the GFMER. The journal invites submissions on all aspects of human reproduction. For submission applications please see Reproductive Health. Perinatal Education Programme (PEP) PEP is a distance learning project which enables groups of nurses or doctors to manage their own courses in maternal and newborn care. It has been developed in South Africa where over 40 000 courses have been completed. Many publications have shown that these self-help courses are very effective in improving knowledge, clinical skills, attitudes and the standard of care provided. One year courses on Maternal Care and Newborn Care are available on the IAMANEH website (Maternal Care Manual - Perinatal Education Programme and Newborn Care Manual - Perinatal Education Programme). Further information on the Perinatal Education Programme, as well as 4 month supplementary courses on Perinatal HIV/AIDS, Primary Newborn Care, Saving Mothers and Babies, Mother and Baby Friendly Care, and Birth Defects, are available on the Perinatal Education Programme (PEP) website. These courses are available at no cost. Participants may make copies of the courses or sections of the courses for their own use but may not sell the courses for profit. Queries should be directed to Professor Dave Woods in Cape Town, South Africa at pepcourse@mweb.co.za. 9th World IAMANEH Congress The World IAMANEH Conferences are held every three years in a developing country. Previous conferences were in Malaysia (2003), South Africa (2000), Brazil (1997), Bangladesh (1994), Indonesia (1991), Pakistan (1987), Tunisia (1984) and Philippines (1981). The Egyptian section of IAMANEH (Egyptian Society of Maternal and Neonatal Health - ESMANEH) will co-host the 9th World IAMANEH Congress in Alexandria, Egypt from 1 to 3 November 2006. The theme of the congress is the importance of maternal wellbeing on the health of the fetus and newborn infant. It is hoped that as many national sections as possible will send delegates and submit presentations. The three-yearly general assembly meeting of IAMANEH will be held during the conference. Unfortunately the international section cannot provide funding for individuals from national sections to attend. However, each national section is urged to consider ways of raising funds locally for their own members. Further information and contact addresses will provided by the conference organisers in the near future.
