I was born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1969. I did my graduation from F.G. College for Women, Rawalpindi and got my MBBS degree from Rawalpindi Medical College in 1993. I did an internship at Holy Family Hospital in the departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics in Gynaecology. I joined armed forces as an MO (Medical Officer) in 1995. Since then I have had the opportunity of serving in different parts of my country. After entering into my professional career, my ambition was to improve maternal and child health services in my country. To pursue this I volunteered for training at MCH centre at MH Rawalpindi in 2005 and got my DGO in 2008.

I was a direct witness to the sufferings of 2005 earthquake disaster effects and 2011 flood victims in my country being a volunteer in the relief teams sent to those areas at that time. What I observed was the lack of basic knowledge regarding maternal and child health, education, immunization and nutrition in the affected areas which had augmented their sufferings. This made me think of working further in the field for providing better health care services to families, and I was part of the recently organized National Conference (MDG 5) at Islamabad from 25-26 Nov, 2013. The main objectives of the conference were:

  • To raise awareness about the serious much neglected issues of high maternal mortality in Pakistan
  • To encourage involvement of all NGOs/INGOs for reducing maternal mortality ratio
  • To identify the gaps between private and public sector regarding efforts to reduce maternal mortality
  • To launch a common forum to address maternal mortality
