Dr Veena Pillai graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2007. She went on to complete her internship in Far North Queensland, Australia. Singapore was her next stop, where she completed 6 months rotations in General Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Psychiatry. She tried her hand at research next, working back home in Malaysia at the Malaysian AIDS Council, running an integrated biological and behavioral surveillance study for transgenders, people who inject drugs and sex workers. Her itchy feet then took her to New Zealand where she held a general medical officer position for one year, rotating between Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Surgery and Medicine. She then returned home, again, to enter the government service for 2 years, dividing her time between rural and urban medicine. After the completion of her 2 years within the government, Veena joined the Centre of Excellence for Research in AIDS, University Malaya. Currently, she is with this Research Institute, conducting research as well as managing a clinic for HIV positive patients with a local prison.
