II. Databases

There are about a series of online databases available on above websites. But it is not free of charge to search those databases.

1. Traditional Chinese Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval Database (TCMLARS) (Chinese)

Subject: Traditional Chinese Medical Periodical Literature

Coverage: contained over 477,000 references and abstracts to literature on Traditional Chinese Medicine, including Chinese herbal medicines, acupuncture, qigong, Chinese massage, health promotion, and other topics. The source material is drawn from more than 800 Chinese biomedical journals published in China since 1984, of which over 100 are speciality periodicals in Traditional Chinese Medicine. More than 42,000 records are added to the system annually.

Field: Chinese title, English title, author, the affiliation and address of the first author, journal title, publication year, volume, issue, page, publication type, check tag, history of medicine, grant type, subject headings, key words, classification code, language, Chinese abstract, English abstract.

Indexing: Descriptor language is adopted in indexing. The thesauri used for subject indexing are Chinese Traditional Medicine and Materia Medica Subject Headings and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).

Abstracts: There are above 50% of references with Chinese abstract offered by authors or by database makers. Some of reference also with English abstract.

2. Traditional Chinese Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (English)

Subject: Traditional Chinese Medical Periodical Literature

Coverage: It contains more than 73,200 references and abstracts to literature on Traditional Chinese Medicine, including Chinese herbal medicines, acupuncture, qigong, Chinese massage, health promotion, and other topics. The source material is drawn from more than 800 Chinese biomedical journals published in China since 1984, of which over 100 are speciality periodicals in Traditional Chinese Medicine. More than 5,000 records are added to the system annually.

3. Traditional Chinese Drug Database (TCDBASE) (Chinese)

Subject: Chinese materia medica or herbal medicine

Coverage: The database contains over 8500 records. Each record represents a single herb, or mineral drug, or other natural medicine, and provides the cited information. The data is derived from Chinese Materia Medica Dictionary, Thesaurus of Chinese Herbs, Chinese Medicinal Materials, Manual of Composition and Pharmacology of Common Traditional Chinese Medicine, etc.

Field: formal name and synonyms, original source of medicinal plants, planting method, collection and storage, parts of the plant for medicinal use, identification of raw medicinal materials, chemical composition, physical/chemical properties, processing methods, dosage form, pharmaceutical techniques, Pharmacological action, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, as the ingredient in a formula, compatibility of medicines, characteristics of the drug, channel tropism, efficacy, indication, usage and dosage, precaution, etc.

4. Traditional Chinese Drug Database (English)

Subject: Chinese materia medica or herbal medicine in common use

Coverage: The database contains 545 records. Each record represents a single herb, or mineral drug, and provides the cited information.

5. Database of Tibetan Medicines (Chinese)

Subject: Tibetan medicines

Coverage: It contains over 500 records. Each record represents a single Tibetan medicine and provides the cited information. Data is derived from ancient classical Tibetan book, such as Yue Wang Yao Zhen, Si Bu Yi Dian, Ancestor’s Dictation, Jing Zhu Ben Cao, and the recent clinical information.

6. Database of Currently Application of Herbal Medicine Formula

Subject: Chinese medical formula

Coverage: It contains over 7,500 records. Each record represents a single prescription and provides the cited information. Data is derived from modern publications such as Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China, Standard for Herbal Medicine Formula by the Ministry of Health, and currently published journal articles.

Field: formal name, Chinese Pinyin name, Latin name, English name, and other synonyms of a formula, ingredients, modification of the prescription, efficacy, indication, usage, precaution, adverse reactions, contraindication, dosage form, preparation, compatibility of medicines, chemical composition, pharmacological action, toxicity/toxicology, pharmacokinetics, manufacturer, etc.

Coverage: It contains 85989 records. Each record represents a single formular and provides the cited information. Data is derived from more than 700 ancient medical books.

Field: formal name, Chinese Pinyin name, Latin name, English name, and other synonyms of a formula, history about the formula, efficacy, indication, usage, precaution, contraindication, ingredients, modification of the prescription, dosage form and specifications, preparation, storage, compatibility of medicines, etc.

Coverage: It contains over 3000 records. Each record represents a single chemical composition and provides the cited information. Data is derived from Active Compositions of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Pharmacology of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Herbal Medicine, etc.

Coverage: The database contains 825 records about information of western medicines and traditional Chinese medicines. Each record represents a single medicament.

11. Database of New Herbal Medicine (Chinese)

Subject: New herbal medicines approved by the State Drug Administration

Coverage: The database contains 1,585 records. Each record represents a single new herbal medicine approved by the State Drug Administration.

Field: medicine name, category, ingredients, dosage form, R&D Institution, manufacturer, applying number, applying date, certificate number, approving date, approving document number, approving authority, warrant number, patent number, valid period, protected period, efficacy, indication, etc.

12. OTC Database (Chinese)

Subject: Over-the counter medicinal products

Coverage: The database contains over 300 records about the cited information of over-the counter medicinal products issued first time by the Chinese government.

Coverage: It contains more than 60,000 records of news drawn from newspapers

Coverage: Information on more than 12,000 hospitals in China was collected.
