Brief description of the organisation

Bangladesh Association for Maternal and Neonatal Health (BAMANEH), the name itself implies the involvement of the organisation in Maternal and Child Health Care in Bangladesh. Being concerned of the alarming situation of increased maternal and neonatal mortality along with higher rate of morbidity, a group of highly experienced medical professionals and eminent social workers were united and laid the foundation of the organization in September 1979. Bangladesh Association for Maternal and Neonatal Health (BAMANEH) as a national NGO as well as an affiliated body of International Association of Maternal and Neonatal Health (IAMANEH) has been working over the last twenty two years in the field of reproductive and child health care in different rural areas of Bangladesh. The program goals of this non Govt. Voluntary Organization is to work towards the reduction of maternal and infant mortality as well as the improvement of reproductive and child health status in Bangladesh.

BAMANEH is registered with the Directorate of Social Welfare, Directorate of Family Planning and NGO Affairs Bureau, Govt. of Bangladesh.

Organizational Structure

BAMANEH is run by a nine member Executive Committee headed by a president. Late Prof (Dr.) Syeda Firoza Begum, eminent Gynaecologist and Obstetrician of the country is the founder President of the organization Dr. Akhter Iqbal Begum, retd. govt. health specialist & ex-consultant of WHO & UNICEF is the current president of BAMANEH. The Executive Committee formulates policy guide line and take decisions on important issues. The decision of the Executive Committee are obligatory for program management. BAMANEH programs are implemented by a group of senior program personnel under the direct guidance of Executive Committee.

Goal and objectives of the organization

Goal : The goal or mission of the organization is to improve the quality of peoples life with special emphasis on reproductive health of rural women & child health so that maternal, neonatal and infant mortality could substantially be reduced and to develop a model of sustainable health care program through the active participation of community people.

Objectives

  1. To identify the magnitude, dimension and genesis of health problems in Bangladesh, specially, the issue of Reproductive & Child health

  2. To bring to the public focus and professional, the factors relevant to above problems with a view to create awareness and take necessary action.

  3. To evolve appropriate solution of the existing Reproductive & Child health
    problems

  4. To promote the relevant causes that contribute towards sustainable development of health in Bangladesh.

  5. To organize branches in the peripheral areas of the country to widely disseminate the
    concept and principles of BAMANEH and rendering necessary services for the
    improvement of quality of life and overall health status.

Networking (National & International)

BAMANEH is a member of Voluntary Health Services Society (VHSS)-a networking agency of health sector NGOs in Bangladesh.. BAMANEH is an affiliated body of International Association for Maternal and Neonatal Health(IAMANEH)-a global networking agency of Maternal & Child health.

Area of experience

At Headquarter level : Conduction of Research/Study, Organization of National and International Conference on health issues, Advocacy & technical support to various health issues including .TBA. training Program . Family Planning ( Clinical method like NSV- No Scalpel Vasectomy, Norplant, Intra Uterine Device (IUD), Injection and non clinical method), Reproductive Health, Quality Assurance of services, Child Health, Nutrition, Women empowerment and Gender issues etc.

At Project level : Essential Service Package (ESP), Skill of conducting basic leadership training to groups, organization management and financial management for groups, basic and refreshers training for TBAs . Conduction of normal deliveries at home by TTBAs, Referral of high risk mothers to nearby hospitals/clinics equipped with better facilities, Formation & strengthening of Mother’s club with landless and marginal land holding families of the community to act as focal point of outreach activities. Formation & strengthening of para /village based health committees to identify and solve local health problems by the people themselves and ensure maximum community participation for the betterment of health ,Growth monitoring & Nutrition education, Wide range of BCC activities, Adolescent health program, Awareness building on HIV/AIDS etc.
